ARTIST STATEMENT
“It’s good of you to remember, but best for you to forget.”
-Xu Zhimou from the poem, By Chance
I showcase the curious and astonishing in my work as a video artist. It is a world with tall tales, epicurean exploits, and overheard conversations. My how-to video, People Were Made to Disappear, left the viewers feeling like their hearts were being pulled out from their throats.
I use found pieces of dialogue, or past conversations with a taxi driver in Mongolia about failed head transplants in France. I collect people’s tales and seek unknown places. So far, I have studied unappreciated corners, faces, and life stories in thirty countries.
A few years ago, I left New York for Miami in search of wandering eccentrics and misplaced dialogue. I have discovered a wealth of material in Florida. Recent themes include suicidal roadkill eaters and an evangelist’s rotten food collection.
I seek an unspoken and uncomfortable dialogue between the viewer and narrative. After watching my videos once, the viewer is left to decide if he should cautiously play it again or consider it best to forget.
